A shared suit is only one test. Consecutive ranks determine whether the hand reaches the stronger category.
| Test | Colour / flush | Pure sequence |
|---|---|---|
| Same suit | Yes | Yes |
| Consecutive ranks | No | Yes |
| Example | 3♥ 7♥ J♥ | 7♣ 8♣ 9♣ |
| Classic priority | Below sequence | Below trail, above sequence |
WORKED CHECK 01
Sort the ranks
Put the cards in rank order. For 3♥ 7♥ J♥, there are gaps between the ranks, so it is a colour.
WORKED CHECK 02
Test a consecutive example
For 7♣ 8♣ 9♣, both the suit and consecutive-rank tests pass. This is a pure sequence and outranks a colour in classic play.
WORKED CHECK 03
Apply the hierarchy first
Do not compare the jack in a colour against the nine in a pure sequence as if both were high-card hands. Establish the category before individual ranks.
