A familiar filename is only the start of the check. Establish the source and signing identity before granting installation permission.
STEP 01
1. Identify the source
Navigate to the publisher’s own distribution page. Compare the product name and publisher contact across the download page and privacy policy. Avoid chat links that pressure you to act quickly.
STEP 02
2. Check the file information
Compare version, file size, and any publisher-published cryptographic digest. A matching digest confirms file equality with that reference; it does not by itself establish the reference’s trustworthiness.
STEP 03
3. Permit the source narrowly
On Android devices that support source-specific installation permission, allow only the intended installer when needed. Screen names differ by Android version and manufacturer.
STEP 04
4. Review and finish
Keep Play Protect enabled. Read the permission prompts and stop if an unrelated request appears. Turn the source-specific installation permission off after completing the installation.
